Unlocked/Datgloi is an album of 10 songs, created by 10 different communities, working with 5 Live Music Now musicians, over 5 Welsh counties, strengthening connections with their local area through sung stories of local heritage.
Creigiau Top Deiniolen was written with GCSE Music students from Dosbarth TGAU at Ysgol Brynrefail, Llanrug in Gwynedd about the The Dinorwic Slate Quarry cottages in Llanberis which became their hang out during lockdown for the Covid19 pandemic in 20/21.
Now part of the Welsh National Slate Museum the closure of the quarry in 1969 shook the whole community, but the abandoned, crumbling cottages remain frozen in time. At its peak the quarry employed 3000 men, many of whom had to travel to work there and so were housed in tiny quarry cottages on site. Families slept crowded together in one room homes, with the most rudimentary sanitary facilities, and existed on meagre rations with rent one shilling a month.
Each cottage was lit by candlelight or paraffin lamp. Although electricity was introduced at the quarry in 1905, it was not fitted in the cottages. The men had an open coal fire for heating and cooking. After paying for the coal at Gilfach Ddu they carried it home up the steep incline. The houses had no plumbing, so water had to be fetched from the nearest stream. There were two outdoor toilets and the men shared all the household duties. In 1937 the houses were condemned as being unfit for human habitation.
Now a tourist attraction the ruins of lines of quarry cottages boast stunning views over the Snowdonia mountains. The quarries are also used as an adventure rock climbing and scuba diving venue.
Born in Gwynedd, Patrick Rimes is a multi instrumentalist musician playing fiddle, piano, pipes and more. He is a member of Welsh folk band Calan and Welsh chamber folk trio Vri, both of whom are part of Live Music Now. He is also part of the Welsh folk super group Pendevig. He has been involved with Live Music Now since 2015.
lyrics
Creigiau Top Deiniolen
Pwy oedd yn tynnu’r hen gyrtans yma?
Berwi’r teciall, a bwydo’r gath,
A rhoi lwmp o lo Arall
Ar yr hen, hen dan?
Just fel ddoe, a fory, a fory Wedyn.
Dyddiau’n troi’n wythnosau,
A ti’n anghofio pa fis ydi hyd yn oed, ond
Sbia lawr ar deiniolen i gyd o fan hyn,
Teimlo fath a bod ar nenfwd y byd yn fan hyn,
Distawrwydd pur, a heddwch o hyd yn fan hyn,
Mae ynysu mor braf yn yr heulwen.
Pwy oeddet ti?
Yn sdyc yn y ty ‘ma,
Yn darllen yr un hen newyddion undonog
Ar y dudalen flaen?
Ar goll yn dy unigrwydd,
A dy ddiogrwydd.
Dim band, dim cor,
Dim dawnsio dim mwy.
Dyddiau’n troi’n wythnosau,
A ti’n anghofio pa fis ydi hyd yn oed, ond
Sb a lawr ar deiniolen i gyd o fan hyn…
Pam fod hi mor mor braf i ddod i ddianc yma?
Be di’r pethau da ni’n osgoi?
