Unlocked/Datgloi is an album of 10 songs, created by 10 different communities, working with 5 Live Music Now musicians, over 5 Welsh counties, strengthening connections with their local area through sung stories of local heritage.
Residents from The Pines Care Home, Gwynedd chose to share their memories of Criccieth Castle and the sea surrounding the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, which song writer Patrick Rimes weaved into music and lyrics. Historically, the peninsula was travelled by pilgrims en route to Bardsey Island and its relative isolation has helped to conserve the Welsh language and culture, for which the locality is now famous. The area is a National Heritage Coastline and a protected site, as well as an official area of outstanding natural beauty.
Criccieth Castle is a native Welsh castle situated on the headland between two beaches in the town on a rocky peninsula overlooking Tremadog Bay. It was built by Llywelyn the Great but was heavily modified following its capture by English forces of Edward I in the late 13th century. The castle was used as a prison until 1404 when Welsh forces captured the castle during the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr. The Welsh then tore down its walls and set the castle alight.
Born in Gwynedd, Patrick Rimes is a multi instrumentalist musician playing fiddle, piano, pipes and more. He is a member of Welsh folk band Calan and Welsh chamber folk trio Vri, both of whom are part of Live Music Now. He is also part of the Welsh folk super group Pendevig. He has been involved with Live Music Now since 2015.
lyrics
Morio
Mor, o fore Gwyn tan nos,
Yn cysgu’n ysgafn tu ol y Castell,
Yn canu grwndi yn y bore bach,
Ac yn cyfarth efo’r cyfnos.
Mae swn y tonnau ym mlas y te,
A halen yn hogla’r glaswellt,
A lliwiau yr enwyn ar erchwyn y traeth,
Yn llygaid y llanc ar ddiwedd y bar,
Na wyddost ti rioed mo’i enw.
Morio canu, morio crio
Morio caru, morio colli,
Morio codi dy ben i fynnu,
A morio byw bywydau.
